Accommodation in Denmark

When you are coming to a new place to study or work you face an accommodation problem. Depending on duration of your visit you have some opportunities to find a place to stay. Here I share my experience in finding cheap and good condition apartment for rent in Aalborg, but some of the resources are valid for whole Denmark. Since I am a student at Aalborg University (AAU) in this page I provide you with an overview of alternatives in choosing optimal accommodation in relation to price and condition of the apartment/room.

International Accommodation Office
If you are an exchange student at AAU you have an opportunity to get accommodation through the International Accommodation Office (IAO) of AAU. IAO assigns rooms for students based on first come, first served principle, so if you decide to use their service contact the IAO as soon as possible. For example on 2010 fall semester there were a lot of students coming to Aalborg and the IAO did not have enough places to offer for international students. I have used their's service when I was an Erasmus student at AAU in 2009. And in 2010 I was too late for ordinary accommodation thus they gave me another alternative.

AKU
AKU (Anvisning af Kollegie- og Ungdomsboliger [Authorization of Student and Youth Homes according to google.translate]) provides housing for students. Here you can get an apartment or room in two ways: (i) one of AKU's apartemnt (ii) a room from private person. If you want to get an apartment from AKU (this should be your first priority, because in the most of these places you have a separate bathroom ant kitchen) you have to register at their website and choose apartments which fit your needs. You can choose between one room to four room apartments. After selecting apartments you will be put on the waiting list for each of your choice. You can apply for the accommodation with your girl(boy)friend. If you apply in a couple then your chances to get it increase. In private housing section you do not need to register at their website, you can download document where you can see available rooms for rent. People usually rent one room to a fellow student in a shared flat, or some family can rent a room in their house's basement. Thus if you find suitable room, you send an email to AKU and ask for contact information of the owner.
If you are looking for an accommodation not in Aalborg you can find Youth homes in other parts of Denmark in this website: http://www.ungdomsboliger.dk.

Housing associations
Since I did not use any services from the housing associations I could not tell you much about it. Here is a list of housing associations:

There are websites where you can find apartments for rent as well. I can categorize each website into commercial, where you have to pay in order to get contact information of the landlord, and non-commercial, where you can see contact information right away.

Commercial Websites
In the http://www.boligportal.dk you have to register in their system in order to get contact information. The price for two months is 350 DKK.

Non-commercial Websites
The following website is free to see and I believe add an advertisement http://www.ledige-lejligheder.dk.
If you want to experience life with other people you can check this website http://www.findroommate.dk  which gives you an opportunity to find roommate of similar believes etc.

Conclusion
The first two choices are only for students and there you can get much cheaper room/apartment than in other places, but not necessarily. If you are looking for the cheapest accommodation you should go for accommodation through AKU. But these rooms are not furnished as are rooms from IAO. The apartment will be furnished only if you get it from IAO but sometimes you can find it from other sources as well. In Denmark usually you get the apartment which is unfurnished.  There is also popular agreement that after moving out from the place you had rented you paint the walls and ceilings.

More information you can always find in Google. At AKU's website you can find a list of useful links.
This is my brief summary on looking for accommodation in Aalborg.

Har en dejlig ophold i Danmark, skål!
